Basel Area Business & Innovation was able to newly settle a total of 27 companies in the Basel Area in 2020. The number of settlements from Asia hit a new high of nine companies. The number of startups also reached a new record with 82 founded.

Bern scientists develop individualized cancer models to predict therapy success
Scientists at the University of Bern and Inselspital have established organoid culture models from prostate tumor biopsies. These are small clusters of cells which can be used to test the efficacy of various drugs, helping to test which treatment will most likely benefit individual patients.

Zurich – Neuroscientists have discovered a mechanism that is partly responsible for the decrease in memory performance brought about by old age. They have also shown how nerve cell generation can be reactivated, which could benefit people with Alzheimer’s disease, for instance.

Medacta offering personalized solutions for hip replacement surgery
Castel San Pietro TI – The prosthetic specialist Medacta has developed two applications for personalized hip replacement operations. The first facilitates preoperative planning in 3D, while the second verifies exact positioning during surgery. The products have now also received clearance from the US FDA.

First patient treated with drug developed by Orpha Labs
Baar ZG – This week, the first patient was treated in Israel with a drug developed by Orpha Labs to combat the rare disorder leukocyte adhesion deficiency type II (LAD II). In particularly serious cases, a special program can be used to grant patients access to this new, highly promising drug even before it has been officially authorized.

Lucerne – Together with two governmental departments in Switzerland, B. Braun Medical AG has designed COVID-19 vaccination sets for hospitals. The MedTech manufacturer has procured the individual components and has been assembling the sets at its locations in Sempach and Crissier since December 2020.
